Permanence

The permanence of an oil colour is defined as: "its durability when laid with a brush & palette knife on ordinary prepared canvas and, while under a glass frame in a dry room, freely exposed to ordinary daylight and an ordinary town atmosphere". The actual grading system is as follows:

  • A = Durable colour generally sold as permanent

PAINTING WHITES
Available in 37 ml, 60ml and 120ml tubes.

Titanium White 37, 60 & 120ml tubes

The whitest and most permanent white, it is the most popular modern white.

Zinc White 37, 60 & 120ml tubes

This has a pure, cold white appearance and is excellent for making tints and glazing. The least opaque of all the whites. Slow drying and non-toxic.

Iridescent White 37ml & 60ml tubes only

An excellent white which captures the unique effect of "light interference." It can be mixed with, or painted over, other colours to produce interesting effects.

UNDERPAINTING WHITE
Available in 37ml and 60ml tubes.

For general use, preparing grounds or mixing into oil colours. (Grounds should be glue-sized prior to application). It resists yellowing and and reduces the tendency for over-painted layers to wrinkle, shrink or crack.

LEAD-BASED WHITES
Available in 60ml and 150ml tins.

Cremnitz White ¤

An 'old-fashioned' type of lead carbonate (without zinc oxide). Gives a slightly "stringy" consistency. Toxic.

Flake White Nos: 1 and 2 ¤

Excellent for general use, a more flexible and durable white which is comparatively quick-drying. Lacks the opacity of Titanium White & the whiteness of Zinc White. Flake White No:1 is stiffer than No:2. Toxic.

Foundation White ¤
Ideal for priming or foundation coats as it is ground in Linseed Oil. (Grounds should be glue-sized prior to application).
